iPhone Operating System – Some information About iOS

iOS ( iPhone OS) is a mobile OS developed and distributed by Apple that has been extended to support other Apple devices such as the iPod Touch , iPad and  Apple TV.

By far and away the most refined, esteemed, and arguably popular mobile OS platform, there is no disbelief that Apple started the modern post-PC period. There's a lot to love about iOS -- it's reliable, the hardware is dazzling and cutting-edge, and it has the largest collection of content and applications. Unlike Microsoft's Windows Phone and Google's Android, Apple does not certify iOS for installation on non-Apple hardware. The client interface of iOS is based on the concept of direct handling using multiple touch gestures.

Apple provides major updates to the iOS operating system approximately once a year over iTunes. On June 10, 2013, Apple announced the latest unstable version of iOS i.e. iOS 7, which will be offered for the iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, iPhone 5, iPad 2, the 3rd and the 4th Generation iPad, iPad mini and the 5th generation iPod. Before iOS 4s make public in 2010, iPod Touch users had to pay for software updated. Apple claimed that this was the casing, as the iPod Touch was not a 'subscription device' like the iPhone (i.e. it was a one-off purchase). Apple claimed it had 'found a way' to deliver software updates for free to iPod Touch users in 2010 at WWDC, when iOS 4 was unveiled.
FLAVOURS OF iOS:
iOS 4:

iOS 4 was made accessible to the public for the iPhone and iPod Touch on 21 June, 2010. This was the first iOS major release to support for some devices and also that iPod Touch users do not have to pay for. The iPhone 3G and iPod Touch (Second generation) have partial features, including be short of multitasking capabilities and the capability to set home screen wallpaper while the iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPod Touch (3rd & 4th generation) have all features enabled, like multitasking. The iPhone and iPod Touch (1st generation) cannot dart iOS 4.0 and above.

iOS 4.2.1, release on 22 November, 2010, added iPad compatibility. Also it was the last version to support iPhone 3G and iPod Touch (2nd generation, MB & MC models).  iOS 4.2 is the first version to bring major feature similarity to the iPhone and iPad. The release of the iPhone CDMA for Verizon Wireless saw a branch of iOS. The 4.2 version series continued for the CDMA phone while 4.3 was out for all other products.

iOS 5:

iOS 5 was the 5th major version of iOS mobile OS from Apple. It was proceeded by iOS 4 (last version was 4.3.5.) and succeeded by iOS 6, which was on the rampage in September 2012. The iPhone 4S came with iOS 5 preinstalled, but older units required the update installation. However, when the updated version was released, firstly many users receives error messages upon attempting to download it, and a few had warnings that their devices could not be restored. It was considered that Apple's servers were simply not capable to keep up with the demand, causing a lot of half of the initial requests for the update to fail. iOS includes features like iCloud (this feature allows users to coordinate their music, pictures, videos, and more across all of their iCloud-enabled devices. Each user is given 5 gigabytes of storage space for free, but is permitted to synchronize unlimited amounts of music, apps, books and photos.),new home screen apps (iMessage, Reminders, Newsstand), deep Twitter integration and many more…

Also it gives devices the ability to sync with iTunes wirelessly.

iOS 6:

iOS 6 was preceded by iOS 5 (final version was 5.1.1). Two notable apps that iOS 6 removed by default are Google Maps and YouTube.

iOS 6 brings the retrieval of documents such as boarding of passes, entry tickets, coupons and trustworthiness cards through its new Passbook app. An iOS gadget with Passbook can be scanned under a reader to process for mobile payment at participating locations. The app has text aware features like notifications for relevant coupons when in the immediate surrounding area of a given store. Facebook comes integrated through Apple’s native apps with iOS 6.

However, having an easy device comes with sacrifices; in iOS 6, Apple replaced the previous Google Maps-based app with its own Maps and faced with poor reception from critics and users, with inexact or partial data, no support for passage maps and inferior satellite imagery. Apple also faced criticism from Ireland's Minister Alan Shatter for Justice and Equality when a map wrongly struck into an Airfield, a farming area in Dublin with a symbol indicating that it was an airport. Apple CEO Tim Cook later on issued a letter on Apple's website apologizing for the disturbance caused by the Maps application.

On September 24, 2012, Apple TV (2nd generation) onwards received the iOS 6.0 software update, with version 5.1's main features being Shared Photo Streams, iTunes account switching, better AirPlay functionality, and Trailers searching, among other smaller improvements.

iOS 7:

iOS 7 is an upcoming mobile operating system from Apple. It was announced at the company's 2013 Worldwide Developers Conference on June 10, 2013.It includes features like: iCloud, AirDrop for iOS, and smartest multitasking feature and many more..

It's now available in beta version for iPhone developers, and will be coming to the iPad in the upcoming weeks.
